Coverage Options for Bass Boats, Bay Boats, Center Consoles, and Jon Boats, From Carriers Who Fish Too
At Roamly, we're not just insurance agents — we're boaters who know a fishing boat is a tool as much as a toy. The electronics alone can cost what some boats do, and a tournament day can depend on having proof of liability coverage in the boat. We'll help you find a policy that fits how you actually fish.
Fishing boat insurance ranges widely because fishing boats do. As of October 2026, Progressive advertises basic liability-only bass boat coverage starting as low as about $100 a year (not available in D.C.), and Progressive's data for its one-watercraft boat policies shows average premiums ranging from about $274 a year in Wisconsin to about $868 in Florida. For full coverage on a newer, higher-value bass boat or center console, industry guides commonly estimate about 1% to 5% of the boat's value per year. Your price depends on your boat's value, horsepower, and top speed, whether you fish inland or offshore, where you store it, and your boating experience.

Get a Quote on Fishing Boat Insurance That Fits How You Fish
Whether it's weekend bass fishing, a tournament season, or a run offshore after the bite, Roamly works with carriers who understand fishing boats. We'll help you find coverage so you can focus on the fish.
Your boat isn't just worth the Blue Book numbers. We'll find you a policy that insures it for what it's actually worth – including your upgraded electronics.
From shallow water prop strikes to dock collisions, we cover the stuff that actually happens to recreational boaters.
Our marine specialists actually spend their weekends on the water. They speak your language because they boat too.
Usually not enough. Many homeowners policies cover only smaller boats with low-horsepower motors, with limits that vary by policy, and cap damage to the boat itself at a small amount. A small jon boat might have limited coverage, but most bass boats, bay boats, and center consoles run far more horsepower and need their own boat policy.
It depends on the policy. Some policies cover equipment permanently attached to the boat, while others treat electronics like a fish finder as an add-on. Rods, reels, tackle, and other gear you bring aboard usually need personal effects or fishing equipment coverage, which carriers we work with may offer as an option. Check the limits before you load up for a trip.
For most major circuits, yes. As of October 2026, the MLF Toyota Series requires anglers to carry at least $300,000 in liability coverage with proof kept in the boat, and Bassmaster has required at least $300,000 in watercraft liability for boaters at its events. Many recreational policies cover amateur tournament fishing, but some carriers exclude it if fishing is your main occupation, so check both your circuit's rules and your policy.
The biggest factors are your boat's value, horsepower, and top speed, whether you fish inland lakes or coastal and offshore water, where you store it, the length of the boating season where you live, your boating experience and claims history, and the deductible you choose. Some carriers won't insure the fastest high-performance bass boats, which is another reason to shop more than one.
Policies typically exclude wear and tear, gradual deterioration, corrosion, manufacturer defects, and damage from mold, insects, or marine life. Freezing damage may be excluded unless the boat was winterized the way the policy requires, and mechanical breakdown, where it's offered, is typically an optional add-on. Taking paying customers fishing isn't covered under a recreational policy, since guide and charter use need commercial coverage. Roamly can help you compare optional coverages, like mechanical breakdown, that may fill some of these gaps.
