Coverage Options for Daysailers, Cruising Sailboats, and Catamarans, From Carriers Who Know the Water
At Roamly, we're not just insurance agents — we're boaters who know a sailboat isn't a powerboat with a mast. Horsepower and top speed matter less, while your rig, your sails, where you keep the boat, and how far you sail matter more. We'll help you find a policy built around the boat you actually sail.
Sailboat insurance can be affordable, especially for smaller boats. As of October 2026, Progressive advertises liability-only sailboat coverage starting at about $100 a year (not available in D.C.), and one insurer's published estimate puts most sailboat policies at roughly $250 to $1,500 a year. For larger cruising sailboats and catamarans, broker estimates commonly run about 1% to 2% of hull value per year, with higher rates in hurricane zones or for charter use. Your price depends on your sailboat's length, value, and age, where you keep it, how far you sail, and your sailing experience.

Sometimes, but not much. Many homeowners policies extend some liability coverage to smaller sailboats, often under 26 feet, but coverage for damage to the boat itself is capped at a small amount, and it may only apply on inland waters. For a cruising sailboat or catamaran, a separate boat policy is usually the way to get real protection.
It depends on the carrier. Some carriers cover racing with limitations, while some policies exclude damage to masts, spars, and sails during a race unless you add coverage for it. Some races, especially offshore events, set their own insurance requirements, so check both your policy and the race rules before the start.
A sudden, accidental dismasting is generally treated as physical damage, but failure caused by wear, corrosion, or aging rigging is commonly excluded. Some carriers depreciate rigging and sails by age while others don't, and some may ask owners of older boats for a survey or rigging inspection, so keeping records of rigging work can make a real difference at claim time.
The biggest factors are your sailboat's length, value, age, and hull material, where you keep it and whether that's in a hurricane zone, your navigation area, whether you race or charter, your sailing experience and claims history, and the deductible you choose. Some carriers don't insure wood or steel hulls, which is another reason to shop more than one.
The coverage is similar, but catamarans often carry higher values, and a 10-year BoatUS claims analysis found multihulls almost twice as likely as monohulls to file a lightning claim. Broker estimates for cruising catamarans commonly run about 1% to 2% of hull value per year, depending on where you sail and whether the boat is chartered.
Policies commonly exclude wear and tear, gradual deterioration, marine life damage, and mechanical breakdown unless you add coverage for it, and many also exclude corrosion and osmosis or blistering. Freezing damage may be excluded unless the boat was properly winterized, and sailing outside your policy's navigation area without approval can leave you without coverage. Roamly can help you compare optional coverages, like mechanical breakdown, that may fill some of these gaps.
