Coverage Options for Ski Boats, Wakeboard Boats, and Wake Surf Boats, From Carriers Who Know the Water
At Roamly, we're not just insurance agents — we're boaters who know a wake boat is where the whole crew spends the weekend. Between the tower, the ballast, the surf system, and a deck full of riders, it's a lot of boat to protect, and we'll help you find a policy that fits how you actually ride.
Wake boat insurance often costs more than insuring a smaller runabout, since wake boats tend to be higher-value and carry riders behind them. As of October 2026, Progressive's data for its one-watercraft boat policies shows average premiums ranging from about $274 a year in Wisconsin to about $868 in Florida. Many new wake boats carry six-figure price tags, though, and industry guides commonly estimate full coverage at about 1% to 5% of a boat's value per year, with published estimates for higher-value and high-performance boats starting around $500 to $1,500 or more a year. Your price depends on your boat's value, horsepower, where you keep and use it, the liability limits you choose, and your boating experience.

Often, yes. Some carriers include water sports liability that names wakeboarding, wake surfing, skiing, and tubing, up to your liability limits. Activities that pull someone into the air, like parasailing, are typically excluded, and coverage details vary by carrier, so it's worth confirming before the season starts.
Usually not. Standard homeowners policies typically don't extend liability to an inboard boat you own, regardless of horsepower, and coverage for damage to the boat itself is capped at a small amount. For a boat worth as much as most wake boats, a separate boat policy is the way to get real protection.
Often not. Many boat policies exclude ice and freeze damage, and some carriers cover it only with an endorsement that also requires the boat to be winterized the way the policy specifies, sometimes by a marine professional. Ballast tanks and pumps hold water, so draining and winterizing them properly before cold weather matters for your coverage as well as your boat.
The biggest factors are your boat's value and age, its horsepower, where you store it and whether you boat on inland lakes or coastal water, your boating experience and claims history, the liability and medical payments limits you choose, and your deductible. Completing a boater safety course or keeping a claim-free record may also earn a discount with some carriers.
Policies typically exclude wear and tear, maintenance, and damage from marine life, and freezing damage may be excluded unless the boat was winterized as the policy requires. Some carriers' mechanical breakdown options cover only outboard and sterndrive units, not inboard engines, and even agreed value policies may pay for canvas, upholstery, and cushions at depreciated value. Commercial use, like charging for lessons, isn't covered under a recreational policy. Roamly can help you compare optional coverages, like mechanical breakdown, that may fill some of these gaps.
