Coverage Options for Adventure Bikes and Street-Legal Dual-Sports, From Carriers Who Know the Road
At Roamly, we're not just insurance agents — we're riders who know an adventure bike doesn't stop where the pavement does. Dirt roads, border crossings, and a bike loaded with gear all raise questions a standard quote doesn't answer, and we'll help you find a policy that fits how you ride.
Adventure and dual-sport bikes are usually among the less expensive motorcycles to insure, though the price climbs with the bike's value. As of October 2026, Progressive advertises liability-only motorcycle coverage starting as low as about $75 a year (not available in D.C.). One personal finance site estimates full coverage for an adventure bike like the Honda Africa Twin at about $400 to $800 a year, and one national study puts average full coverage for all motorcycles at about $399 a year. Industry loss data shows dual-purpose motorcycles have the lowest collision claim rate of any motorcycle class. Your price depends on your bike's value and engine size, your age and riding record, where you live and park, and the coverage you choose.

Whether it's a gravel loop after work or a months-long trip with everything you own on the bike, Roamly works with carriers who understand adventure and dual-sport riding. We'll help you find coverage so you can focus on the road ahead, paved or not.
We know a cruiser isn't a sport bike. Roamly helps you find the coverage that fits with how you ride, from dirt trails to open roads.
Most insurers offer minimal coverage for custom parts. Our partners provide up to $20,000 in coverage for your aftermarket mods and custom work.
Most insurers don’t cover organized track events, riding schools, and time trials. Push your limits. We’ll make sure you’re covered.
Usually not, compared with other motorcycles. Industry collision loss data for 2020–2024 models shows dual-purpose motorcycles have the lowest collision claim rate of any class and overall collision losses about a third of the average motorcycle. The bike's value still matters, so full coverage on a flagship adventure bike will usually cost more than on a smaller dual-sport.
It depends on the policy. Some street motorcycle policies exclude or limit off-road riding, and the terms for unpaved public roads versus closed trails aren't always spelled out. Ask the carrier or your agent directly before you head off pavement, and don't assume a crash on a dirt road will be covered.
Many U.S. motorcycle policies extend to Canada, but check your policy's coverage territory before you go. U.S. policies generally don't meet Mexico's legal requirements, so plan to buy a separate Mexican motorcycle policy before you cross the border.
Aftermarket add-ons are typically covered only up to your custom parts and equipment limit. Adventure builds can add up fast, so total what you've added and raise your limit if it's higher than what your policy includes.
A street-legal dual-sport that's titled and registered for the road is usually insured on a standard motorcycle policy. An off-road-only dirt bike may be insured differently, depending on the carrier. Rules for converting an off-road bike for street use vary by state, so check with your DMV and your insurer.
Policies typically exclude racing, timed events, and riding on a track, along with wear and tear and normal maintenance. Off-road riding may be excluded or limited depending on the policy, and accessories beyond your custom equipment limit may not be fully covered. Roamly can help you compare optional coverages that may fill some of these gaps.
