Coverage Options for Mopeds, Scooters, and Maxi-Scooters, From Carriers Who Know the Road
At Roamly, we're not just insurance agents — we're riders who know a scooter is often someone's everyday ride. It's parked on the street, ridden in city traffic, and used for errands and commutes, and we'll help you find a policy that fits how you ride.
Scooters and mopeds are often among the less expensive two-wheelers to insure, since premiums tend to be lower for smaller engines and lower-value bikes. As of October 2026, Progressive advertises liability-only scooter and moped coverage starting at about $75 a year, before state fees and taxes (not available in D.C.). Full coverage costs more, especially for larger scooters in big cities: in one New York City quote example for a Vespa GTS 300, a basic policy cost about $312 a year, while a policy with full coverage cost about $1,975 a year. Your price depends on your scooter's engine size and value, your age and riding record, where you live and park, and the coverage you choose.

Get a Quote on Scooter and Moped Insurance That Fits How You Ride
Whether it's a daily commute across town or a weekend ride to the beach, Roamly works with carriers who understand scooters and mopeds. We'll help you find coverage so you can focus on the ride.
We know a cruiser isn't a sport bike. Roamly helps you find the coverage that fits with how you ride, from dirt trails to open roads.
Most insurers offer minimal coverage for custom parts. Our partners provide up to $20,000 in coverage for your aftermarket mods and custom work.
Most insurers don’t cover organized track events, riding schools, and time trials. Push your limits. We’ll make sure you’re covered.
It depends on your state and your ride. Many states require liability insurance for scooters and for mopeds above certain engine-size or speed limits, while others don't require insurance for qualifying mopeds. Larger scooters are often treated like motorcycles. Check your state's rules before you ride.
Mopeds typically have an engine of 50cc or smaller and a top speed of around 30 mph, while scooters usually have larger engines and can go faster. Each state sets its own legal definitions, using engine size, top speed, or horsepower, so the same ride can be classified differently from one state to the next.
Usually not. Car insurance policies generally don't extend to mopeds or scooters, so you'll typically need a motorcycle policy, a separate scooter and moped policy, or an add-on to your auto policy if your carrier offers one. A homeowners policy typically won't cover a moped or scooter on public roads.

Full coverage on a larger scooter costs more, especially in a big city: one New York City quote example for a Vespa GTS 300 ran about $1,975 a year. Comparing carriers is the best way to see your actual price.
Stand-up electric scooters are typically not eligible for scooter or moped insurance. E-bikes are treated as bicycles in most states. A homeowners or renters policy may cover an e-bike as personal property, but limits and liability coverage are often restricted, so many riders look at a separate e-bike policy. A seated electric moped may be insurable, depending on how your state and the carrier classify it.
Liability-only policies don't cover damage to or theft of your own scooter. Policies also typically exclude wear and tear and normal maintenance, and aftermarket parts or accessories may not be fully covered unless the policy includes them. Roamly can help you compare optional coverages that may fill some of these gaps.
