Coverage Options for Full-Dress Tourers, Baggers, and Long-Haul Bikes, From Carriers Who Know the Road
At Roamly, we're not just insurance agents — we're riders who know a touring bike is built to be a long way from home. A breakdown three states away, a passenger on the back, and a bike that can cost as much as a car all change what your coverage needs to do, and we'll help you find a policy that fits how you ride.
Touring bikes often sit in the middle on price: industry loss data shows they generally cost less to insure for collision than supersport bikes, but they cost more to repair than most cruisers. As of October 2026, Progressive advertises liability-only motorcycle coverage starting as low as about $75 a year (not available in D.C.). One national study puts average full coverage for motorcycles at about $399 a year, though a touring bike's higher value and repair costs can push full coverage above that. Industry loss data shows touring bikes are in fewer collision claims than cruisers, but each claim costs more, so overall collision losses run about a third higher. Your price depends on your bike's value, your age and riding record, how many miles you ride, where you live and park, and the coverage you choose.

Most insurers don’t cover organized track events, riding schools, and time trials. Push your limits. We’ll make sure you’re covered.
They often cost less to insure than supersport bikes but more than many cruisers. Industry collision loss data for 2020–2024 models shows touring bikes are in fewer collision claims than cruisers, but each claim costs more because the bikes are bigger and pricier to repair. Collision coverage pays for damage to the bike, so most of that difference comes from repair costs.
Trip interruption coverage can help pay for food, lodging, and transportation if a covered breakdown or crash leaves you stuck away from home. Carriers handle it differently: some set a dollar limit, some only apply it once you're more than a set distance from home, and some require you to add another optional coverage first. Ask how a policy handles it before a long trip.
Sometimes. Guest passenger liability can cover your passenger's injuries when you cause a crash, and medical payments coverage can help with medical bills for you and your passenger regardless of fault. Some states require guest passenger liability as part of a standard policy and others don't, so check how your policy handles a passenger.
Factory-installed equipment is usually covered as part of the bike. Accessories you've added are typically covered only up to your custom parts and equipment limit, and the belongings inside your bags may need separate carried contents coverage. Check your limits against what your add-ons are worth.
The biggest factors are your bike's make, model, and value, your age and riding record, how many miles you ride each year, where you live and park the bike, your credit in states that allow it, and the coverage and deductible you choose. Anti-lock brakes, a rider safety course, or paying in full may also earn a discount with some carriers.
Policies typically exclude wear and tear and normal maintenance, and mechanical breakdown is usually an optional add-on where it's offered. Accessories beyond your custom equipment limit and modifications you didn't disclose may not be fully covered, and racing or riding on a track is typically excluded. Roamly can help you compare optional coverages that may fill some of these gaps.
