From the Road to Hana on Maui to Saddle Road across the Big Island, Roamly works with carriers who understand how Hawaii riders actually ride.
Requirement
Details
Minimum liability
20/40/10 ($20k bodily injury per person, $40k per accident, $10k property damage) for motorcycles and motor-driven cycles. Car minimums rose to 40/80/20 on January 1, 2026, but the motorcycle minimums didn't change.
Helmet law
Required for operators and passengers under 18. Every rider and passenger, at any age, needs safety glasses, goggles, or a face shield unless the bike has a windscreen or windshield.
Lane splitting
Illegal. Hawaii law bars riding between lanes of traffic or between rows of vehicles, and the 2018 shoulder-riding pilot expired at the end of 2020. Two motorcycles may ride side by side in one lane.
Registration
Annual safety inspection required — as of September 2026, the fee is $17.75 for motorcycles, and you'll need proof of insurance to get it. No emissions testing. Registration runs through your county, and fees vary by county.
Requirements and regulations may change. Verify with the Hawaii Insurance Division and your county motor vehicle office for the most current information.
Hawaii's no-fault system is built for cars, not motorcycles: riders have lower liability minimums, no required PIP, and injury coverage only if they choose it. Here's what actually shapes your policy.
Motorcycle and motor-driven cycle policies must carry 20k/40k bodily injury and $10k property damage — half of what cars now need. Insurers must offer medical payments coverage up to $10k, an income disability plan, and higher liability limits, but none of those is required. We'll help you figure out what makes sense for how you ride.
Your Rebel 1100 with the bobbed fender and custom paint isn't a stock bike. Roamly works with carriers who may value your sweat equity, not some database guess.
Visitors land in Honolulu every day wanting to ride the coast, and shipping a bike to the islands isn't practical. Want to list yours on Twisted Road or Riders Share for them? Many personal policies exclude rental use, so check yours first. Roamly works with carriers who may be able to help.
After a DUI, reckless driving, or driving while suspended, Hawaii's financial responsibility law can require proof of insurance before you get your license back, and the requirement can end after three years without a new disqualifying conviction. Roamly works with carriers that file SR-22s, and we'll help you get the filing started. No judgment.

Mechanical Breakdown Coverage
Engines fail at the worst times — like halfway along the Road to Hana, with a long, winding ride in either direction. Through Roamly's carrier partners, coverage may be available to help with sudden mechanical breakdowns beyond warranty.
Riding Gear Coverage
Helmets, jackets, boots, and gloves — and in Hawaii, eye protection is required for every rider unless the bike has a windscreen. Roamly works with carriers who may offer coverage options to help protect your riding equipment.
Agreed Value for Custom Builds
Your garage-built bike is worth more than a database number. Roamly works with carriers who offer Agreed Value coverage that may insure your build for what it's actually worth.
The Road to Hana, Saddle Road, and Waimea Canyon draw riders from all over the world, and very few of them bring a bike along. Listing yours on Twisted Road or Riders Share can help it earn its keep between your own rides, but many personal policies exclude rental use — check yours before you hand over the keys. Roamly works with carriers who may cover your bike even when it's rented through legitimate platforms, which may help you earn from your bike while keeping it protected.
Hawaii mandates 20/40/10 liability coverage for motorcycles — lower than the 40/80/20 cars have needed since 2026. That's $20k per person and $40k per accident for bodily injury, plus $10k for property damage. Motorcycle policies don't have to include PIP, and riders generally can't claim PIP under a car policy unless that policy expressly provides it, so the medical payments coverage insurers must offer deserves a close look. Riders under 18 need a helmet, and everyone needs eye protection unless the bike has a windscreen. The minimums keep you legal, but they won't go far if you total someone else's Road Glide or hurt someone badly — and liability alone doesn't pay to fix or replace your own bike. We'll help you figure out what makes sense for your situation.
You built your bike the way you wanted it: Vance & Hines exhaust, Corbin seat, custom paint, and upgraded suspension. Stock book value doesn't account for the work you put in or the parts you upgraded. Roamly works with carriers who offer Agreed Value coverage options — we'll help document your build so it may be insured for an agreed amount that reflects your upgrades, which may help if you ever need to file a claim.

Insurance policies referenced are offered through Roamly and underwritten by third-party carriers including Progressive, National General, Foremost, Safeco, Nationwide, Dairyland, Mercury, and Plymouth Rock, among others. Not all products or coverages are available in every state. Coverage terms, conditions, limits, deductibles, exclusions, and availability vary by state, carrier, and policy. We know a cruiser isn't a sport bike. Roamly helps you find the coverage that fits with how you ride, from dirt trails to open roads.
Most insurers offer minimal coverage for custom parts. Our partners provide up to $20,000 in coverage for your aftermarket mods and custom work.
Most insurers don’t cover organized track events, riding schools, and time trials. Push your limits. We’ll make sure you’re covered.
Hawaii requires 20/40/10 liability coverage on motorcycles and motor-driven cycles: $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $10,000 for property damage. Car minimums went up on January 1, 2026, but the motorcycle minimums didn't. These minimums keep you legal, but they might not be enough if you cause serious damage or injury. Requirements may change — verify with the Hawaii Insurance Division.
Only if you're under 18. Operators and passengers under 18 need a DOT-compliant helmet. Eye protection is a separate rule: every rider and passenger, at any age, needs safety glasses, goggles, or a face shield unless the bike has a windscreen or windshield. A 2026 bill to require helmets for all riders died in committee.
It depends on your bike, riding history, where you live, and the coverage you pick. Adding medical payments, higher liability limits, collision, or comprehensive will change the price. Get a personalized quote to find out your rate.
Roamly is a brokerage — we work with carriers who may cover your motorcycle while it's rented through platforms like Twisted Road and Riders Share. Many personal policies exclude rental use, so it's worth checking yours before you list. Coverage terms, conditions, and availability vary by state and policy.
Roamly works with carriers who offer Agreed Value coverage options. We may help document your mods up front so your bike can be insured for an agreed amount, not a depreciated database number. If it's totaled, the agreed value — less any deductible — is what the policy is built around. Coverage terms, conditions, and availability vary by state and policy.
Liability is what Hawaii requires — it pays for damage you cause to other people and their property. "Full coverage" usually means adding collision and comprehensive, which help pay to repair or replace your own bike after a crash, theft, vandalism, or storm damage. If you're financing, your lender will likely require both.
An SR-22 is a certificate your insurer files to prove you carry at least the minimum coverage. In Hawaii, proof of financial responsibility is handled at the county level and can be required after convictions like DUI, reckless driving, or driving while suspended. It can generally be canceled after three years if you haven't had another disqualifying conviction in that time. Roamly works with carriers that file SR-22s and can help you keep it active. Coverage terms, conditions, and availability vary by state and policy.
Hawaii bans credit-based pricing for auto insurance, but motorcycle policies fall under a separate part of the state insurance code that doesn't address credit, so it's worth asking each carrier how it rates. Your riding record, bike, and location are also major rating factors, and how much each one counts varies by carrier.
Generally, no. Hawaii's no-fault system is built around cars, and motorcycle riders and passengers can't claim PIP under a car policy unless that policy expressly provides it. Motorcycle policies don't have to include PIP either — insurers only have to offer medical payments coverage up to $10,000. If you're riding on a learner's permit, you'll generally need to complete a state-approved rider course to get a policy, though a temporary binder of up to 90 days may be available while you're enrolled. We can help you choose the right coverage.
